EMERGENCY HOUSING: HISTORY & PROGRAMS

The THRU Project Emergency Housing Program is intended to support individuals aged 18+ who have a history of foster care, are single, and experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of eviction. Through a collection of self-determination, guidance, case management, and individualized plans, participants will be provided with short-term housing assistance and stabilization services. This program is intended to intervene at critical moments and prevent long-term housing instability.

The goal of the program is to provide immediate relief for participants who are actively establishing and strengthening self-sufficiency. The Emergency Housing Program is not intended to be a permanent housing solution, but to help eliminate the housing barriers that many individuals face transitioning out of foster care. Through a structured service plan, participants will receive financial assistance to facilitate short-term housing for approximately one to six months until self-sufficiency is more attainable. The period for financial assistance is at the discretion of THRU Project and discussed throughout the service plan process.

Each participant will go through an intake assessment to create an individualized service plan that will identify goals toward employment stability, financial security, wellness, and sufficiency. Participants are expected to actively work toward achieving these goals for the duration of the program to ensure continued short-term housing. Some required goals may be, and not limited to, engaging in BreakTHRU, THRU Works, and THRU Talks. Failure to participate in these goals, as listed in your service plan, can result in dismissal of services.

Our programs are unique because we provide an apartment, RENT-FREE, for one full year while also providing support services and requiring youth to learn the basic life skills we all need to live independently. Once youth are accepted into our housing program, they are introduced into their new apartment. THRU Project is able to provide some of the necessary basic needs to help furnish their first apartment with the help of monetary donations and physical donations of specific household items.

Having this opportunity of a rent-free apartment for six months allows our youth to focus on other areas of their life like elevating their job status, applying for college or trade school, or both. While in our program, THRU Project works with the youth to tailor a budget to their needs and help them adjust it as their needs change. We assist them in opening a savings account in their name and the importance and peace of mind that savings provide. Once our youth have completed our program, they either take ownership of their current lease or they move where they wish.
